Biofuel: Your car sits and dines with you

August 8th, 2009

Global conflict, biofuel or biodiesel awareness emerges when the the hydrocarbon fuel (gasoline/petrol or diesel) as non renewable source is depleting and at the same time contributed too many harmful gases to the Earth and human survival especially.

So, what is biofuel or biodiesel?
Biofuel refers obtained from relatively recently lifeless or living biological material and is different from fossil fuels, which are derived from long dead biological material. Also, various plants and plant-derived materials are used for biofuel manufacturing. While biodiesel is diesel-liked fuel consisting of long-chain alkyl esters.. a type of oil or sort of the oil used in cooking but made suitable for burning in engine. The “bio” originated from a vegetable oil or animal fat as base oil and chemically transesterification with alcohol. Remember alcohol can burn and disolve oil. Biodiesel can be used alone, or blended with petrodiesel. Biodiesel is meant to be used in standard diesel engines and is thus distinct from the vegetable and waste oils used to fuel converted diesel engines.

Fats in Palm forbiodiesel has poor low temperature properties. Blends of Jatropha and Palm biodiesel have been examined to study their physico-chemical properties and to get an optimum mix of them to achieve better low temperature properties, with improved oxidation stability.

Now, we know that vegetable oils, animal fat and used organic oil can substitue petroluem. So what is the trouble?

Irony, the darn plain sustainability

I came across a made in USA writing pad labeled “Sustainable” in a stationery shop. Imagine it came halfway of the globe to Asia.

I am not good in math. But go figure the how much kilo-tonne carbon was released to bring this little book here. I wonder, would chopping a tree at your backyard forest and made it to paper would cost less sins to the Earth?

Hello world!
